About Southport

Southport Aerospace Centre Inc. was established as a not-for-profit, non-share corporation in 1992 to manage the assets of the former Canadian Forces Base Portage la Prairie, which was originally established in 1940 as a training base for military pilots. After the transition from CFB Portage to Southport occurred, military pilot training continued through the 3 Canadian Forces Flying Training School which was being operated by Bombardier and succeeded by Allied Wings (now KF Aerospace) in 2005 until present.

Economic Impact

In February 2019, Southport released a new economic impact study that measured the economic contributions associated with the ongoing activities of Southport through an analysis of 2019 operations. The report was undertaken to update the previous economic impact study of 2016, as significant changes have occurred at Southport since then. This new report highlights how Southport's impact can ripple through the local and provincial economy either directly, indirectly, or through induced impact.

Four Winds Cultural Centre

The Four Winds Cultural Centre, a representation of Southport's dedication to the local Indigenous community, joined Southport's Interpretive Park in 2021. The Four Winds Cultural Centre stands tall at the entrance to the site with a 30-foot teepee, a spacious community picnic shelter and a sweat lodge enclosure.

Community Support

Southport and its staff support a wide variety of community functions held each year. This includes sponsoring programs, volunteerism, and being visible and involved in local and provincial events and celebrations.

Southport is invested in Environmental Stewardship and works to establish long-term policies and procedures aimed at preserving and enhancing the quality of our local environment. This is achieved by doing what is best to make our community a better place to live and work.

As a not-for-profit, non-share corporation, Southport is governed by a Board of Directors with responsibility for the overall operation and governance of Southport. To assist in this responsibility, the Board has established a General Membership made up of community representatives.

The Spirit of Southport Award recognizes and appreciates individuals, organizations, agencies or groups committed diligently and consistently to practicing such values as excellence in standards, transparency, innovation, accountability, integrity, mindful respect, equity and loyalty to benefit the larger good. These are the goals of practice Southport Aerospace Inc. is committed to. By presenting the Spirit of Southport Award, Southport recognizes those individuals and organizations whose accomplishments are of such excellence that they provide inspiration and set an example to both Southport and our community. The Spirit of Southport Award is presented by our Board of Directors at the Annual General Meeting at the end of June.
